Thanks to the extraordinary vision of the women of The Childhood League, The Childhood League Center began in 1945 as a nursery providing needed care for infants and young children during World War II. The first nursery provided care for the children in the Sullivant Gardens Housing Project on the west side of Columbus.
By September of 1951, just six years after its founding, The Childhood League bought land and built a new nursery school. Construction of the new school was made possible through the heroic efforts of the League’s founding members and the generosity of the community.
True to the hopes of the League’s founders and with dauntless courage, League women accepted the challenge multiple times over the years to raise capital dollars for program expansion. In 1990, the League successfully raised $1.2 million to build our present home. Located across the street from Children’s Hospital, the Center continues to serve as a beacon of hope for children with special needs and their families.
Today, the Center is a licensed, accredited early education and intervention program committed to providing essential services for nearly 400 children, birth to age 6, in our community. Throughout the past 65 years, the League has steadfastly believed in the capabilities of each young learner who has come to the Center full of unlimited potential.
